Target 9: Colons Double point target

:

Task 3: Find your own evidence

Find in your written work, from any subject, a sample of writing where you have used a
colon correctly.

Teacher’s comment on work sample:

:

Using colons is a higher level punctuation skill, so well
done if you have been able to use them in your work.

Remember, colons are not used very often but if you can

think of a sentence occasionally in your writing that
shows you know how to use them correctly, it will help
improve your grades.
GREAT WORK!

Summary

Colons are used to introduce:
 bullet points

 lists in a sentence (but only if the words before
the colon make sense on their own)
 a quote
 an explanation or definition.
They can also be used to show who is speaking in play
scripts.
