TARGET YOUR WRITING!

Why is it important to have good writing skills?
 By improving your writing, you will be able to improve your grades in all of your
subjects.

 Good writing skills allow you to get your ideas across clearly so that you do not
confuse your reader.

 Good writing skills will help you in life – for example when you apply for a job or

when you are keeping records at work.

So, what is good writing?

Good writing:
 is suited to the audience (person or persons) it is written for
 has good grammar, punctuation and spelling
 is organized so that it is easy to follow with good use of paragraphs
 has a good range of vocabulary and uses a variety of types of sentences to keep
the reader interested.

How can this course help you to improve your writing skills?
The course will teach you to use a number of WRITING TOOLS
that will improve your writing.

 The ‘WRITING TOOL BOX INSTRUCTION MANUAL’
explains how to use each of the writing tools. Use it as a
guide whenever you have to do written tasks.

 This TASK BOOKLET has TWO sections. SECTION ONE has tasks for you to
practise using each of the writing tools. Then, once you have shown that you can

use the tools, there are some more challenging tasks in SECTION TWO which give
you the opportunity to put them to use.

How will I know I’m making progress?
You will be able to keep a record of your progress in the booklet.

 For section one, use the chart on page 3 to record when you have successfully

completed each of the practice tasks. You can also use the review chart on page 21
to decide how well you have used each of the writing tools.

 For section two, you will be asked to fill in one of the self-assessment charts at
the back of the booklet. This will allow you to think about what you need to do to

improve your writing skills and to set yourself targets for improvement.
