Target 6: Apostrophes - Rule 1 (contractions) have not
haven’t
Apostrophes are used above words to show
where one or more letters are missing.
The apostrophe goes
where the letters
Remove the letter or letters. have been removed.
Put in the apostrophe.
Squash the words together.
I am …….. I ’m …….. I’m
These shortened words are called contractions.
Apostrophes are used in this way in INFORMAL
writing (such as in speech or writing to friends). You
should not shorten words in formal writing.
Examples of contractions:
she will ..... she’ll should have ..... should’ve he has ..... he’s
NOTE: will not ...... won’t
This is shortened in an irregular way but we still put in an
apostrophe to show where letters have been missed out.
