Audience

This is the person or persons who will be reading your work. Your audience may be

young children, your friends, teenagers, adults or a person with a particular job (for
example, a manager, a headmaster or a newspaper editor).

You need to match your writing to your audience. Different audiences need different
styles of writing and you also need to match your vocabulary to suit your audience.

Woosh! The rocket blasted off. It
flew up into the sky and soon it was
out of sight.

Spaceflight technology enabled our
space vehicle to overcome the force

of gravity and accelerate into space.
An amazing achievement!

Purpose

This is the reason why you are writing. You may be writing to:
 argue or persuade
 explain or inform

 describe or entertain.

Type

Think about what type of writing is needed. It may be, for example, a letter, a
newspaper report, a story or a description. You now need to decide on the style of
writing that will suit the task. Will it need to be FORMAL or INFORMAL?

FORMAL WRITING: Most writing that you will be asked to do will need a FORMAL
style. This means that you will write using ‘standard’ English.

When writing in a FORMAL style:
 Do not use slang words.
 Do not use contractions such as don’t or I’ll.
ALWAYS WRITE WORDS IN FULL.
