Ordering the paragraphs:

Your paragraphs must be in a clear order and in an order that suits the purpose of
your writing. For example, your paragraphs may be put:

 in order of time
 in order of importance
 in order of arguments for and then arguments against.

It is up to you how you order the paragraphs, but the order MUST MAKE SENSE and
MUST LINK TOGETHER. For example, when writing a story, you may wish to go back

in time so that you can talk about something your character has done in the past. This
is fine as long as you make it clear to the reader.

How are paragraphs linked together?

You can use words, phrases or a sentence to show that a paragraph links to the one
before, or to show that you are moving on to something new. This is often called
SIGNPOSTING because it guides your reader.

... and therefore homework teaches children to be
responsible for their own learning.

Another advantage of homework is that it can help pupils
achieve better grades. Homework allows pupils to think about

what they have learned and to practise new skills. Recent
studies have shown that homework does improve grades by
as much as 50%.

However, too much homework can often cause stress...

Hints for signposting: Topic Sentences

When your paragraph is making a new point, you can make the first sentence a ‘topic
sentence’, especially if it is a long paragraph. This tells the reader about the main
point of the paragraph. Here are some examples:

There are three main reasons why people choose to go abroad for their holidays.
Firstly, ... (go on to say what the reasons are).

Eating a balanced diet is very important... (Go on to talk about why it is important).

Bob’s house was next to the railway station... (Continue to describe the house and its
setting).
