Full Stops, Exclamation Marks, Question Marks
Full Stops (.)
Full stops are used to end most sentences.
My father works in London. The rain has stopped.
Full stops are sometimes used to show a word has been
abbreviated (shortened) – usually if the end of the word is
missing.
Prof. Patel (Professor has a full stop since the end of the word is
missing). Mr Jones (Mister does not have a full stop after it – it’s the
middle of the word that is missing).
Other examples are cont. (continued), approx. (approximately), fig.
(figure) and anon. (anonymous).
Question Marks (?)
Question marks are used at the end of sentences that ask a
question.
What time is it? How many months are there in a year?
Exclamation Marks (!)
Exclamation marks are used to show strong feelings like
shock, fear, pain, surprise or anger. They can also be used
to give urgent commands and to show when someone is
shouting.
Stop it! Help! Ouch! Sit on your chair!
