TARGET YOUR SPELLING! PARTS 1, 2, 3.

(Suitable for Key Stages 3 and 4)

next session in the comment section of the Student Progress/IEP Record Sheet and
give a copy of the words to the student for him/her to learn. Always check these words
before moving on to the next target.
• Parts 2 and 3 each start with a revision test that reviews the previous part of the
programme. These are reminders of words that have been covered in the previous
part. This is a good indicator of whether the student has been placed at the correct
stage of the programme.
• Words are read out in each target for the student to spell. The results are then
recorded in the booklet. Correct words can be ticked, circles put around incorrect words
which need to be learned. For groups and whole classes the method is the same, the
teacher reads out the words to be spelt before the students record in the booklet.
• Students are given up to 10 words to learn at home before their next session. This is
checked in the next session. Students need to be made aware that the more effort
they put in at home the greater the chances are of their spelling improving.
• Student’s progress is recorded after each session in the front of their programme. This
can then be used as an Individual Educational Plan for students with weak literacy
skills.
