SUGGESTED INSTRUCTIONS:

• Carry out a spelling test, e.g. Graded Word Spelling Test (Vernon), to assess the
student’s current spelling age.
• Retest after the programme to demonstrate and quantify the level of improvement.
• It is suggested, as a general guideline, that:
i. Students with a spelling age below 8 start on Part1.
ii. Students with a spelling age 8.1 – 10 start on Part2.
iii. Students with a spelling age above 10 need only complete Part3.
• Suggested time spent on the programme –approximately 15-20 minutes per session
once or twice a week.
• Students working through Part 1 (which covers the most frequently used words) should
undertake one target per session at the most, unless they have no errors. Weaker
students may require more than one session to complete a target. As a rough guide,
end the session when five to six words have been miss-spelt. These words are then
recorded in the comment section of the Student Record Sheet and a copy of the words
given to the student to learn. It is important that these words are checked at the
beginning of the next session before continuing with the programme.
• Students on Parts 2 and 3 should undertake one or two targets per session. (Parts 2
and 3 cover phonics, useful spelling rules with examples, frequently miss-spelt words,
suffixes and groups of words covering different phonic lengths). Most targets consist of
words to be read out for the student to spell in a notebook and exercises that may be
completed on the sheet. Keep a record of words given to the student to learn for the
