Tool 7: Proofreading Tool Sweep away
your mistakes!
PROOFREADING is sure way to improve your grades!
What is proofreading?
Proofreading means reading your work to look for errors. It’s not just about spotting
spelling mistakes: there are other mistakes to look out for too.
So, what kinds of mistakes should I look for?
Check that your writing makes sense and that you
have not missed out any words. Also check the,
grammar, punctuation and spelling.
What is the best way to proofread your work?
Read slowly to give yourself time to think.
Try moving a ruler across each line as you read to follow the words on the page.
It is a good idea to proofread for one thing at a time (e.g. for sense, then for
grammar, then for spelling etc). You will spot more mistakes by focusing on one
type of error at a time.
It is best to take a break between doing your work and proofreading your work.
Reading it with ‘fresh eyes’ will help you to spot mistakes.
Keep a dictionary or electronic spellchecker near when you proofread. You can also
use this TOOLBOX INSTRUCTION MANUAL to check spelling, punctuation and
grammar rules.
If you find it easier to hear your mistakes rather than see them, try reading
aloud. If this is not possible (as you may be in the classroom), listen to the sound
of your voice ‘inside your head’ as you read.
A good way to spot spelling mistakes is to read your work BACKWARDS. Read
from right to left, starting at the last word. This will help you to look at the
individual words instead of thinking about what the sentences tell you.
If you are using a computer, print out a copy to proofread (it is harder to
proofread from the computer screen).
