Tool 3: Spelling Tool


Use the SPELLING TOOL
to tighten up your spelling!

First of all, the BAD NEWS:


The words that we write most often (the
high frequency words) do not always follow
the spelling ‘rules’ and so people often
misspell them.


Now for the GOOD NEWS:

The 100 most common words make up OVER A
HALF of all the words that we write or read. So,
making sure that I can spell these words will
certainly improve my writing!



Here are some hints for learning how to spell words:

1. Write out the word, then:- Say the names


LOOK and SAY of the letters.
COVER the word Picture the word

VISUALISE and SAY in your head.
WRITE the word

and CHECK Is it correct?

2. Invent a mnemonic for all or part of the word, e.g.
because big elephants cry and upset small elephants

3. Sound out the syllables, e.g.

Yes-ter-day hos-pit-al dis-in-fect-ant

4. Make several tries in rough until the word looks right, e.g.
becose becase becouse because


5. Use a dictionary you are familiar with. It is a good idea to use your own
dictionary and keep it in your school bag. You can also use the table of high
frequency words on the next page.
